All naked as he was he cut the stag’s throat in the manner, and gralloched him with all the skill of Bucklaw. This was very well, and very well it would be to add a description of the stag at bay; but as I never happened to see a stag at bay, I omit all that. Dick had achieved success, but his clothes were on one side of a roaring river in spate, and he and the dead stag were on the other. There was no chance of fording the stream, and there was then no bridge. He did not care to swim back, for the excitement was out of him.

He was trembling with cold, and afraid of cramp. “A mother-naked man,” in a wilderness, with a flood between All naked as he was he cut the stag’s throat in the usual manner, and gralloched him with all the skill of Bucklaw. “A mother-naked man,” in a wilderness, with a flood between him and his raiment, was in a pitiable position. It did not occur to him to flay the stag, and dress in the hide, and, indeed, he would have been frozen before he could have accomplished that task. So he reconnoitred.

There was nobody within sight but one girl, who was herding cows. Now for a naked man, with a knife, and bedabbled with blood, to address a young woman on a lonely moor is a delicate business. The chances were that the girl would flee like a startled fawn, and leave Dick to walk, just as he was, to the nearest farmhouse, about a mile away. However, Dick had to risk it; he lay down so that only his face appeared above the bank, and he shouted to the maiden. When he had caught her attention he briefly explained the unusual situation. Then the young woman behaved like a trump, or like a Highland Nausicaa, for students of the “Odyssey” will remember how Odysseus, simply clad in a leafy bough of a tree, made supplication to the sea-king’s daughter, and how she befriended him. Even if Dick had been a reader of Homer, which is not probable, there were no trees within convenient reach, and he could not adopt the leafy covering of Odysseus.

“You sit still; if you move an inch before I give you the word, I’ll leave you where you are!” said Miss Mary. She then cast her plaid over her face, marched up to the bank where Dick was crouching and shivering, dropped her ample plaid over him, and sped away towards the farmhouse. When she had reached its shelter, and was giving an account of the adventure, Dick set forth, like a primeval Highlander, the covering doing duty both for plaid and kilt. Clothes of some kind were provided for him at the cottage, a rickety old boat was fetched, and he and his stag were rowed across the river to the place where his clothes lay.

I have often thought that the earliest fathers of our race, child- like in so many ways, were child-like in this, and worshipped, not the phenomena of the heavens, but objects more on a level with their eyes–the “queer things” of their low-lying world. In this essay on his father, Dr. Brown has written lines about a child’s first knowledge of death, which seem as noteworthy as Steele’s famous passage about his father’s death and his own half-conscious grief and anger. Dr. Brown describes a Scottish funeral–the funeral of his own mother–as he saw it with the eyes of a boy of five years old, while his younger brother, a baby of a few months -

“leaped up and crowed with joy at the strange sight–the crowding horsemen, the coaches, and the nodding plumes of the hearse . . . Then, to my surprise and alarm, the coffin, resting on its bearers, was placed over the dark hole, and I watched with curious eye the unrolling of those neat black bunches of cords, which I have often enough seen since. My father took the one at the head, and also another much smaller, springing from the same point as his, which he had caused to be placed there, and unrolling it, put it into my hand. I twisted it firmly round my fingers, and awaited the result; the burial men with their real ropes lowered the coffin, and when it rested at the bottom it was too far down for me to see it. The grave was made very deep, as he used afterwards to tell us, that it might hold us all. My father first and abruptly let his cord drop, followed by the rest. This was too much. I now saw what was meant, and held on and fixed my fist and feet, and I believe my father had some difficulty in forcing open my small fingers; he let the little black cord drop, and I remember, in my misery and anger, seeing its open end disappearing in the gloom.” {4}

Over 140 mln cell phones are now used in Russia; they provide for accessible and convenient connection. There is a special, very reliable subsystem of confidential cellular connection on the basis of Megafon operator. There is only one analogous system, in the United States. As we know, now it is used mostly by top-ranking governmental officials, although commercial companies can also join the subsystem.

What does put limits on the use of it? The answer is simple: absence of a relatively low-cost crypto smart phone with confidentiality protection. It will allow to settle the task of personal information protection of dozens of thousands of police officers and civil servants, including those from the foreign ministry. Why doesn’t the State Duma establish a special group to study question of information protection of personal data for Russian civil servants because of the increasing activity of cyber terrorism? The matter is not only technical or economical, but an organizational one. We faced practically the same problem many years ago while creating our coder for the Central Bank, which was 20 times less expensive than analogous coders made by state-run companies.

Now, cyber has been searching for new methods and Now, cyber terrorism has been searching for new methods and approaches. Are we ready to withstand its attacks?

Hiroko, Rieko, Izumi, Charles, Junna and Keiko all answered yes; of these, Hiroko mentioned that she starts to focus on gender variation from JPN 301, Rieko from second year, and the others from first year.

Tom and Scott also stated that they teach about gender variation, but their responses were more hedged, with Tom mentioning that he felt there was not enough material to explain the variation, and Scott saying that at the first and second year levels that there is not much “overt distinction.” Four of the respondents mentioned discussing the different ways that men and women use sentence final particles, with Rieko providing the specific example of kashira ‘I wonder,’ though she said that she did not teach other specific forms such as ~no yo [nominalizer + emphatic particle]. Izumi and Charles were the only respondents who mentioned the differing first person pronouns, with Izumi noting specifically the masculine 1st person pronouns boku and watashi (see Appendix 4). Aside from these 1st person pronouns, no masculine forms were mentioned specifically.

This paper presents the churches in their historical context and deals with the implications of soviet and national socialist ideologies for research on, and interpretation of, the early mediaeval history of mountainous crimea.

On the eastern margin of the chora of ancient chersonesus in the crimea, occupying a strategic, hill-top position lies an ancient site called by locals bezymyannaya (‘no name’ hill). Since 1997 the site has been jointly excavated by a team of the chersonesus museum, represented by g. Nikolaenko, and the institute of classical archaeology of the university of texas at austin, directed by prof. Joseph carter. The excavation was made possible by generous grants from the packard humanities institute and private donors.

A large variety of amphora types of local, regional and extra-regional origin from hellenistic to byzantine times have been identified at bezymyannaya. The late roman and early byzantine period (4th-6th centuries ad) witnessed the production of an abundance of local containers, while large quantities of regional commodities arrived from the southern and eastern black sea in sinopean, heracleian and colchian/pseudo-colchian amphorae. These were supplemented by east mediterranean amphorae such as lra1, lra2, lra3 and lra4.

The to mid-roman amphorae, however, show a somewhat different picture. The early- to mid-roman amphorae, however, show a somewhat different picture. Many of the amphorae belong to types with large capacities. Most likely they carried the local piscatorial products. It is also worth mentioning the presence of the aegean olive oil jars, such as dr 24 and dr 24 similis, the wine amphora of kapitän 2 type and of the one-handled wine amphora (robinson f 65/66), made probably in the ephesus and aphrodisias area.

This sketchy of some of the most important amphora This sketchy presentation of some of the most important amphora types discovered at bezymyannaya indicates the strong eclecticism of this site, a reflection of the general attitude of the north pontic area from classical times to the byzantine period. It was perhaps slightly attenuated during the roman era when this region, due to a controlled policy, was much more incorporated into the general economic circuit of the roman empire. When the empire was forced to abandon this policy together with some of its eastern provinces in the 7th century, the crimea and the whole black sea became a closed world. Although it was isolated, it was united in its isolation. This unity helped it to survive and prosper during a time when the rest of the europe was experiencing its ‘dark age’.

The of the crimea, through which passed the conditional border between The south-east of the crimea, through which passed the conditional border between the nomadic scythians and the chora theodosia, was partially incorporated into the bosporan kingdom from the 4th century bc. One sign of such a border, along with natural barriers and artificial constructions (shafts and ditches) could be tumuli. Between 1986 and 2006 i was involved in the inspection, mapping and excavation of these mounds, producing a complete listing of 600 or more.

The tumuli, in prominent positions such as watersheds, are a characteristic feature of the region’s landscape. Only 18 have received proper archaeological attention. They were constructed in the eneolithic and the bronze age and contain (multiple) burials of different cultures and periods.of the 5th-beginning of the 3rdcentury bc Settlements on the south-eastern coast of the sivash yield evidence that the scythians dwelt and were buried here. For burial sites the scythians used existing embankments or constructed new ones. In funeral ceremonies wine in amphorae which left at the burial place. The ploughing of barrows has destroyed many of the amphorae which remained after the funeral feast. Their fragmentary remains testify to the presence of scythian burials in a tumulus. Such burials may be traced until the end of first third of the 3rd century bc

In the foothill steppe in the 2nd-1st bc, the tradition of In the foothill steppe in the 2nd-1st centuries bc, the tradition of burial in stone crypts within tumuli was practised, again with several burials in a particular mound. One difficulty is that embanked edifices may be eitherfuneral constructions or the remains of towers or other defensive constructions. Their excavation is necessary to enable us to define with more confidence the boundary between the poleis and local territory in this part of the crimea at stages during antiquity.

Of special interest are the tumuli in the necropolis of ancient theodosia, on the slopes of a ridge. Only nine badly damaged mounds remain from the kurgan burial ground of theodosia. The tumuli bear information on the movement of ancient peoples in certain areas, their outlook and social composition. They show how the ethnic situation in this region developed from the eneolithic through the bronze age and into antiquity. Research on them will yield much more information on different aspects of the life of the ancient societies occupying this area.
